NuvaRing Birth Control - Overview

The NuvaRing vaginal ring is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in women electing to use the NuvaRing for contraception. Push Health connects people who need a NuvaRing prescription with medical providers who can provide a NuvaRing prescription when appropriate to do so.

How Does NuvaRing Work?

How does the NuvaRing work? The NuvaRing is a vaginal ring that contains two hormones - etonogestrel and ethinyl estradiol. The vaginal ring itself is flexible, transparent, almost colorless and it is not biodegradable. One NuvaRing is typically inserted into the vagina every three weeks or as directed by one's medical provider. After vaginal insertion, the NuvaRing releases 0.015 mg of ethinyl estradiol and 0.120 mg of etonogestrel per day on average over 21 days. This combination of hormones in the NuvaRing impairs ovulation and changes the endometrium and cervical mucus. Both hormones are rapidly absorbed after the vaginal ring is inserted and the hormones are bound to proteins in the blood. NuvaRing hormone metabolism primarily occurs in the liver and excretion occurs via the feces, bile and urine. Some people do not like the concept of a vaginal ring and prefer oral contraceptive options such as Lo Loestrin Fe, Ortho Tri-Cyclen, or Sprintec instead.

NuvaRing - Cost

The NuvaRing is not cheap without insurance. In fact, at this time, the NuvaRing costs up to $180 per vaginal ring at many pharmacies. Some insurance plans will over the cost of the NuvaRing at a pharmacy for their members which will reduce some or all of the cost. NuvaRing coupons may also be available from the manufacturer or online which will reduce any additional costs that one might face when buying a NuvaRing.

Can I Buy NuvaRing Online?

The NuvaRing requires a prescription before a pharmacy can dispense it. NuvaRing OTC (over the counter) is not available and, as a result, one cannot simply buy a NuvaRing online. The first step to getting a NuvaRing is consulting a licensed medical provider and getting a NuvaRing prescription. Push Health can connect people who need a NuvaRing prescription with a medical provider who can, when appropriate, prescribe the NuvaRing vaginal ring.

NuvaRing - Side Effects

The side effects of NuvaRing prescription medication use include, but are not limited to, vaginitis, nausea, sinusitis, headache and respiratory infection. Some people have also reported that the NuvaRing was associated with weight gain. The NuvaRing vaginal ring should not be used by anyone with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to NuvaRing.
